16 June 2016 –The Filipino community in Moscow celebrated the 118th Anniversary of the Proclamation of Philippine Independence at the Philippine Embassy on June 12.

The commemoration started with the flag-raising ceremony followed by a Holy Mass officiated by Fr. Michael Ryan and the reading of messages of President Benigno S. Aquino III and Foreign Affairs Secretary Jose Rene D. Almendras.

In his remarks, Philippine Ambassador to the Russian Federation Carlos D. Sorreta lauded the Filipino community’s contribution in raising the profile of the Philippines in Russia through their exemplary work ethics. The Ambassador thanked them for their support of Embassy-initiated activities as well as their active participation in the recently concluded presidential elections. 

The highlight of the event was the “Pistang Pinoy sa Pasuguan,” a cultural show featuring Philippine folk dances and music. It was the debut performance of the newly-established Cultural Performing Group of the Philippine Embassy in Moscow composed of volunteers from the Filipino community.

The celebration ended with a salo-salo of traditional Philippine fiesta fare. END
