22 March 2016 – Philippine Ambassador to the Russian Federation Carlos D. Sorreta visited Russia’s Institute of World Economy and International Relations (IMEMO) on March 16. He met with Dr. Vitaly Shvydko, Head of the Section for Japanese Economics and Politics Studies of IMEMO’s Center for Asia Pacific Studies, and Junior Research Fellow Ms. Kristina Voda.
Ambassador Sorreta shared the Philippines’ perspectives on politico-security developments in the Asia Pacific, including the West Philippine Sea disputes. The meeting also discussed Russia’s renewed push for deeper engagement with the region in various fields of cooperation. Ambassador Sorreta underscored that the Philippines welcomes this development, strongly convinced of Russia’s important role in promoting peace and security in the region.
IMEMO is one of Russia’s leading research centers founded in 1956 by the Russian Academy of Sciences. It provides policy inputs to legislative and administrative bodies as well as consultancy services to private organizations on a wide range of political and economic matters. Aside from the Center for Asia Pacific Studies, IMEMO has 18 other thematic and area studies sections, including the World Economy Forecasting Section, Department of International Capital Markets, Section for Political Theory, Section of Economic Modeling, and Center for International Security.
