19 February 2016 - Philippine Ambassador to the Russian Federation Carlos D. Sorreta, met with Dr. Dmitri Trenin, Director of the Carnegie Moscow Center, on February 17, in Moscow.
Ambassador Sorreta and Dr. Trenin exchanged views on Russian foreign policy on a wide range of issues - from general international relations questions such as the evolving global order and Russia’s place in it, to specific matters including Russia’s relations with the West, Ukraine, and developments in the Middle East, particularly in Syria.
Dr. Trenin also shared his assessment of Russia’s “rebalancing” move to the Asia Pacific in the past two years, future direction of the Russo-Chinese strategic partnership, and Russia’s position on the West Philippine Sea disputes.
Prior to joining the Carnegie Moscow Center as Director and Chair of its Research Council and Foreign and Security Policy Program, Dr. Trenin served in the Russian Army from 1972-1993 in different capacities. He was Senior Research Fellow at the NATO Defense College in Rome in 1993 and staff member of the delegation to the US-Soviet Union nuclear talks in Geneva from 1985 to 1991. He obtained his PhD degree in History from the Institute of US and Canadian Studies of the Soviet Academy of Sciences in 1984.
